Should learning be fun?

Learning isn’t always easy. So should it be fun, or is education working as intended?

In a recent interview on Triggernometry 1, Jared Horvath, a neuroscientist whom I first knew of when he testified in front of the US Senate about the effects of screen time on education and children, gave his take on how modern education is failing children.

I largely agree with his takes on education, but there were also some things that I sort of disagree with. Whether learning should be fun is one of them.

“People think learning should be fun right? Well, working out isn’t fun. Sometimes when you need to move your biology in a new direction, and learning is, you’re forcing your biology to reinterpret the world around you, it ain’t easy.”

Now to be fair, he did say that learning can be fun — it just won’t be fun 24/7. I agree with that.

But to me, he seems to imply that learning is not supposed to be fun, that schools with bored kids is the system working correctly, and that I disagree with.

What is 'fun'?
